About:
Faculty of Social Sciences and Politics was established in 1993 to fulfill the needs of local and regional society development. It was previously under the Faculty of Letters as Department of Sociology and Anthropology. The establishment of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Politics was also motivated by the intellectual demand in the society that social issues and human resources were among the most important aspects requiring advanced development along with technology, science and economy.
Most of the staff members have obtained their master degree at well-known universities in Indonesia and overseas. Four of them have obtained their PhDs at the universities in Germany, United States, and Jakarta. The other four are presently studying in Indonesia and Australia for their PhD. The active 57 staff members guide and supervise 820 students. It is at the ratio 1: 14.4.
The faculty consists of three departments: Sociology, Anthropology and Politics. To accommodate the drive for autonomy system in the government and the development of information and technology, the faculty will open the programs on governmental administration, communication and post-graduate. The three departments focus their activities on researches, lectures, and social services.
Facing the global free market era, the faculty develops its curriculum on methodology, fieldwork research, inter-disciplinary perspective, and entrepreneurship competencies as well as English mastery. Department of Anthropology is ready to launch this new curriculum in the academic year of 2003/2004 to be followed by Department of Sociology and Program Study of Politics.
In addition, some faculty members have been invited to present their papers in the international seminars. The faculty had also conducted cooperation with the university of Bielefeld, Germany, by which Prof. Hans-Dieter Evers, Dr Solvay Gerke and Dr. Inge Bunschu worked in the faculty for about two years. In return, two of its staffs were invited to Bielefield, Prof Abdul Aziz Saleh as the visiting professor and Dr. Bustanuddin as the research fellow for three months in the end of 1994. The two other staff members are, at present, accomplishing their PhD program in Germany. FISIP also acquired some aids from Germany DAAD agency in forms of books, television, and computer set.
The faculty also organized joint seminars with the International Institute of Islamic Thought Malaysia (IIITM) on Islamization of Social Sciences on July 1997 and June 1998. In addition, the Department of Anthropology, in collaboration with Department of Anthropology of the University of Indonesia, organized an International Symposium on July 2001.
There have also been short visits each year by foreign experts to share their ideas and research findings before the faculty members. They have come from Australia, Malaysia, Japan and Germany.
Furthermore, English Proficiency has always been a serious emphasis in the curriculum. The faculty provides more credit hours for English. Regular activities are organized to improve English among students and teaching staffs. In addition to sending teaching staff to intensive English courses, the faculty also holds weekly English discussions. Students are required to have a minimum 400 TOEFL score before taking thesis exam. The faculty also hosts overseas students, such as from Netherlands and Japan who want to study and conduct their research on West Sumatra culture and society. To access information, students and staff are allowed to use the department computer unit connected to Andalas University LAN.
Several junior teaching staff members gained the junior research competition and two of them have gained the excellent research project (RUKK) for the academic year of 2001/2002 from the Directorate of Higher Education (DIKTI). They also gained research projects from the Research and Development Section of the Provincial Government and Padang Cement Factory; the most recent one is from the Research Center of Andalas University. Some of the staff members, Bustanuddin Agus obtained a certificate as the best senior researcher in Social Science. Nusyirwan Effendi and Damsar earned the certificate as the best junior researchers.
